Site Prep Coordination in Toronto and GTA
Readying Your Space for a Flawless Install
Glass installation is a finishing trade. If the rough opening isn't square, if the blocking isn't solid, or if the floor isn't level, the glass won't fit. Delays caused by site unreadiness cost money. Installix offers Site Prep Coordination. We work with you or your contractor before the glass arrives to ensure the framing and substrate are perfectly prepared to receive heavy architectural glass.
Why Prep Matters
Structural Support
Heavy glass showers and railings need wood blocking behind the tile or drywall. If there's no stud where the hinge needs to go, we can't install the door safely. We identify these hard points early in the framing stage.
Level & Plumb
Frameless glass has very tight tolerances (1/16"). If a floor slopes significantly, we need to know beforehand to cut the glass out-of-square or specify a U-channel to hide the gap.
The Solution: Proactive Consultation
We visit the site at the framing stage (before boarding) and again after tiling. We mark exactly where blocking is needed for hinges, clamps, and headers.
What We Check
- Shower Curbs: Is the curb pitched correctly (inward) to prevent leaks? Is the top flat?
- Railing Decks: Is the rim joist doubled up to accept the lag bolts for the railing posts?
- Mirror Walls: Are the electrical boxes set flush so the mirror can sit flat?
Technical Specifications
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Blocking | 2x4 or 2x6 solid wood backing screwed flat between studs at hinge/clamp heights. |
| Tile | Must be fully cured (24hrs) before we drill. No "hollow" sounds behind tile where hinges mount. |
| Thresholds | Must be solid material (marble, granite, solid surface). Glass cannot sit on grout lines. |
Our Process: Guide and Verify
Step 1: Framing Walkthrough
We spray paint locations for blocking. We advise on curb widths and door swing clearances.
Step 2: Pre-Measure Check
Before we come to measure for glass, we ask for photos to confirm the site is ready (tile grouted, tub set).
Step 3: Install Day Prep
We advise on clearing the path. We need clear access free of other trades (painters, plumbers) to carry heavy glass safely.
Pricing Factors
- Consultation Fee: Site prep visits are billable time, but they save money by preventing re-measures and re-orders.
- Remediation: If we arrive and blocking is missing, we may charge to install it (if accessible) or wait time.
