Why Custom Measurements Matters in Toronto

Toronto experiences -3.7°C winters, 22.3°C summers, and 831 mm of annual precipitation — conditions that demand custom solutions built for Toronto's specific climate. Lake Ontario moderates Toronto's temperatures year-round; the downtown core is 2-3 C warmer than suburban areas due to the urban heat island effect, and lake-breeze fronts trigger localized summer thunderstorms along the waterfront.

Permits & Regulations in Toronto

Permit May Be Required

Custom installations may or may not require a permit depending on scope. Structural modifications, changes to building envelope, or work affecting fire separations require a permit. Contact Toronto Building at 416-397-5330 for a determination.

Condo note: Condo owners in Toronto must obtain written approval from their condominium corporation before any window, door, or glass replacement. The building envelope is a common element, so modifications typically require board consent and may need an engineer's review.

Custom Measurements Across Toronto

We serve homeowners and businesses in all Toronto neighborhoods including The Annex, Kensington Market, Yorkville, and The Beaches.

Precision Measuring for Perfect Fits

In the glazing industry, "close enough" is not good enough. A discrepancy of 1/8th of an inch can mean a piece of tempered glass—which cannot be cut on site—is useless scrap. Whether you are a general contractor with 50 units to order or a homeowner planning a DIY project, accurate measurement is the foundation of success. Installix offers professional site measurement services in Toronto. We take the liability off your shoulders, using laser precision to provide manufacturing-ready dimensions.

The Risk of Measuring Yourself

Rough Opening vs. Unit Size

Novices often measure the "daylight opening" (what you see) or the "rough opening" (the stud framing). Neither is the correct glass size. You must calculate the "bite" (how far the glass sits inside the frame) and deduct for setting blocks and expansion gaps. We know these formulas for every window system.

Out-of-Square Openings

Older Toronto homes have settled. Frames are rarely perfectly square. Measuring just width and height isn't enough; you need to check diagonals and use laser levels to determine the "tightest point" of the opening so the glass doesn't bind.

The Solution: Guaranteed Dimensions

When we measure, we produce a detailed cut-sheet ready for the factory. If we measure it and we install it, we guarantee the fit. If it's wrong, we pay for the remake.

Why Choose Installix?

  • Laser Technology: We use Bosch laser measures and digital protractors for complex shapes (arches, rakes).
  • Template Service: For non-geometric shapes, we create physical hard-board templates to send to the glass plant.
  • Hardware Prep: We measure hinge locations and handle bore heights for glass doors to the millimeter.

Technical Process

Metric Detail
Deductions We calculate standard deductions (e.g., -1/4" width, -1/4" height) based on the glazing channel depth.
Thickness Check We use glass thickness gauges to determine if existing units are 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, or 6mm.
Coatings We use detectors to identify which surface has the Low-E coating to ensure the new glass matches.

Our Process: Measure Twice, Cut Once

Step 1: Site Visit

We visit the site once the framing or existing frames are ready.

Step 2: Drawing

We produce a labeled diagram for every piece of glass, noting tempering stamps and polished edges.

Step 3: Verification

We cross-check measurements against access paths (e.g., will this 100" wide glass fit in the elevator?).

Pricing Factors

  • Scope: Measuring one window vs. an entire condo tower.
  • Complexity: Templates for curved glass cost more than simple rectangle measurements.
  • Credit: Ideally, the measurement fee is credited towards the installation if you proceed with us.

Common Questions about Custom Measurements

For simple residential quotes in our service area, estimating is free. For complex fabrication templates (e.g., custom curved glass), there is a technical service fee.
We use laser measuring tools and digital templating to ensure accuracy to 1/16th of an inch (1.5mm), critical for tempered glass which cannot be trimmed.
For a rough quote, yes. But for ordering, we MUST take our own measurements. We take full responsibility for the fit; if we measure it and it doesn't fit, we re-make it at our cost.
We proudly serve the entire Greater Toronto Area, including downtown Toronto, North York, Etobicoke, Scarborough, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, and Oakville.
No, we have mobile technicians across the GTA. Our standard pricing applies to Toronto and the surrounding cities without hidden travel fees.
Standard commercial glass cutting tolerance is ±1.5 mm for dimensions up to 2500 mm, and ±2.0 mm for larger panels. CNC waterjet or CNC scoring machines achieve tighter tolerances of ±0.5 mm for precision applications like glass shelving and table tops. For tempered glass, dimensional tolerances are specified before tempering because the heat process can cause minor dimensional changes of 1–2 mm.
Annealed glass can be cut into virtually any shape, including circles, ovals, curves, and complex profiles. Cutouts for outlets, pipes, or hardware require a minimum of 25 mm from any edge to the cutout and 50 mm between cutouts. Inside corners must have a minimum radius of 10–15 mm to prevent stress cracks. All cuts and holes must be completed before tempering; tempered glass cannot be modified after heat treatment.

What Our Customers Say

"Tim is a true craftsman. We have old wood casement windows that were foggy and drafty. He replaced the glass carefully without chipping the paint or damaging the stops. It's rare to find tradespeople who treat your home with this much respect."

Michael ThompsonToronto

"We had a landscaping rock go right through our sliding patio door. Danyil arrived to board it up and measured immediately. He was meticulous about cleaning up the broken glass shards from our hardwood and the deck. The new tempered unit was installed a week later and looks perfect."
