Too Long; Didn't Read

  • Vinyl: The Winner. Efficient, affordable, zero maintenance. Best for residential.
  • Aluminum: The Condo King. Strongest, thinnest profile, but cold (conductive).
  • Fiberglass: The Upsell. Strong like aluminum, warm like vinyl, priced like gold.
  • Hybrid: Aluminum exterior (for color), Vinyl interior (for warmth). The best compromise.

Answer First: For a standard residential home in the GTA, Vinyl is the correct choice 95% of the time. It offers the best thermal performance for the price. Only choose Fiberglass if you have massive openings (over 8ft wide) that vinyl can't support, or if you plan to paint your windows in 10 years (you can't paint vinyl).

1. Vinyl (PVC): The Residential Standard

  • Pros: Excellent insulator (warm), corners are welded (airtight), cheapest option.
  • Cons: Thicker frames (less glass), can warp in black if not reinforced, cannot be painted.
  • Best For: Detached homes, bungalows, townhouses.
  • Verdict: The ROI champion.

2. Aluminum: The High-Rise Standard

  • Pros: Incredible strength. Can hold massive heavy glass. Very thin frames (Modern look).
  • Cons: It's metal. It conducts cold. Unless it has a massive "Thermal Break," it will sweat in winter.
  • Best For: Commercial storefronts, high-rise condos, modern glass walls.
  • Verdict: Essential for big structural glass, bad for bedrooms.

3. Fiberglass: The Premium Niche

  • Pros: Expands/contracts at the same rate as glass (seal lasts forever). Paintable. Very strong.
  • Cons: Expensive (2x to 3x the cost of vinyl). Limited design options.
  • Best For: Forever homes where budget is no object.
  • Verdict: Better than vinyl? Yes. Worth double the price? Usually no.

4. The "Hybrid" Option (Aluminum-Clad)

This is gaining traction in Toronto.

  • Outside: Aluminum ( Durable, can be black/charcoal/bronze).
  • Inside: Vinyl (Warm, welded corners).
  • Result: You get the sexy modern look of aluminum without the condensation issues.

Truth Table: Material Comparison

Feature Vinyl Aluminum Fiberglass Hybrid
Thermal Efficiency Excellent Poor (Cold) Excellent Good
Strength Medium (Needs steel reinforcement) High High High
Price Point $ $$ $$ $
Maintenance Zero Zero Zero (unless painted) Zero
Color Options Limited (unless foiled) Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited

Summary

Stick to premium Vinyl for your house. If you want the dark modern look, get a Hybrid or a high-quality Foil-Wrapped Vinyl. Leave the aluminum for the office towers.
