Soundproof Windows for City Living: Laminated Glass vs. Triple Pane
Too Long; Didn't Read
- The Myth: "More panes = More Quiet." Not always.
- The Science: STC measures voices. OITC measures streetcars. You need OITC.
- The Solution: Laminated Glass (OITC ~36+) beats Triple Pane (OITC ~31) for traffic noise.
- The Best of Both Worlds: Triple Pane with a Laminated Insert.
Answer First: If your main problem is Cold, buy Triple Pane. If your main problem is Noise (streetcars, traffic, construction), buy Laminated Glass. Standard Triple Pane windows block voices well but often fail against low-frequency rumble. To stop a streetcar, you need the shock-absorbing PVB plastic layer found in Laminated Glass.
Living in Toronto means living with noise. Whether it's the 501 Queen streetcar or Gardiner traffic, silence is a luxury.
Most homeowners assume that the thickest "Triple Pane" window will block the sound. They are often disappointed.
Here is the physics of why.
The Rating That Matters: STC vs. OITC
Window labels show two ratings. Salespeople usually confuse them.
- STC (Sound Transmission Class): Measures high-frequency noise (Voices, Birds). Great for office privacy.
- OITC (Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class): Measures low-frequency noise (Rumble, Engines). This is the Toronto rating.
Standard Triple Pane has high STC (blocks voices) but mediocre OITC (lets rumble in).
Laminated Glass: The Noise Killer
Laminated glass is used in car windshields. It consists of two glass sheets glued with a PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral) plastic layer.
- How it works: Normal glass vibrates like a drum skin, passing sound through. The plastic layer in Laminated glass acts as a shock absorber, deadening vibration instantly.
- The Result: It kills the "rumble."
Comparison: The Numbers
- Standard Double Pane: STC 26 | OITC 22 (You hear everything)
- Standard Triple Pane: STC 34 | OITC 28 (Better, but rumble persists)
- Laminated Double Pane: STC 40 | OITC 35 (The Sweet Spot)
- "Soundproof" Window (Triple + Laminate): STC 45+ | OITC 39 (Recording Studio level)
The Installix Recommendation
- Quiet side street? Save money. Double Pane is fine.
- Near a school? Triple Pane is great. It blocks high-pitched playground noise and keeps you warm.
- Queen St, King St, or Highway? You MUST specify Laminated Glass. Standard Triple Pane will not stop streetcar vibration.
A Note on Installation
The best glass is useless if the frame leaks air. Sound travels through gaps like water. We use acoustic spray foam around the frame to seal those gaps.
