Too Long; Didn't Read

  • Standard Size 1: 5-Footer (59.5" x 79.5"). Two panels.
  • Standard Size 2: 6-Footer (71.5" x 79.5"). Two panels.
  • The Cost: A standard door is ~$1800 installed. A custom door is ~$2800.
  • Security: Get the "Foot Lock" (Kick Lock). It’s non-negotiable for Toronto safety.

Answer First: Before you order a new patio door, measure the width of your current frame. If it is roughly 5ft (60 inch) or 6ft (72 inch), you are in luck. You can buy a "Stock" size and save huge money. If it's 68 inches? You're paying for custom.

The Two Kings of Doors

In Ontario, 90% of builders used two sizes for backyard walkouts.

The 5-Foot Slider (The "Townhouse" Door)

  • Actual Frame Width: 59 1/2 inches.
  • Actual Frame Height: 79 1/2 inches.
  • Rough Opening Needed: 60" x 80".
  • Why: Fits smaller dining rooms.

The 6-Foot Slider (The "Detached" Door)

  • Actual Frame Width: 71 1/2 inches.
  • Actual Frame Height: 79 1/2 inches.
  • Rough Opening Needed: 72" x 80".
  • Why: The "Standard" for most suburban homes.

Features That Matter

1. Wheels (Rollers)

Cheap doors use nylon (plastic) wheels. They flatten over time, and the door drags. Demand: Stainless Steel or "Tandem" Rollers.

2. The Kick Lock

Sliding doors are the easiest entry point for burglars (they just lift them out of the track). Solution: A "Kick Lock" or "Foot Bolt" drills into the sill. Even if they pick the main lock, the door cannot slide.

3. Mini-Blinds (Internal Blinds)

You can get blinds inside the sealed glass unit.

  • Pros: You never have to dust them. Cats can't destroy them.
  • Cons: Expensive ($500+ add-on). You lose some energy efficiency (lower ER rating).

"Garden Doors" vs. Sliders

A "Garden Door" is a double door where one swings like a front door, and the other is fixed (or opens for air).

  • Pros: Classic look. No track to step over. Squeaky tight seal.
  • Cons: Needs swing space inside. Screens are awkward (sliding screen on a swinging door).

Summary

Measure twice. If you can frame your wall to accept a 6-foot Standard door, do it. The price difference between Stock and Custom pays for the framing labor.

Door Dragging?

We replace rollers, tracks, and handles. Don't replace the whole door if you just need $50 worth of new wheels.
